‘Y’all ready for some SHREDDIN’?’ – An Introduction to the new kids on the block that are about to ROCK your world’

Ben Katzman’s Degreaser are everything that is right with the world right now, so if you haven’t heard of them, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? The band pray to the ‘shred’ gods every night, and intend to get you onboard with their extra-heavy guitar tones and exciting riffs.

ABOUT THE BAND

Formed in 2014 as per their website “amidst the dirt and frenzy of Boston’s electric DiY community” *quickly googles what that means* Degreaser is a “Lovechild” of one Ben Katzman. Ben self confesses his lust for all things Metal, explaining that his main influences are “KISS, Van Halen and The Ramones”

Luckily, we were able to have a quick chat with Ben Katzman who explained that;

“I always push for the ideology that the only way to be cool is to be yourself. These days technical skill is missing from rock, and rock takes itself too seriously. I want people to know you can still have a good time while playing music and that you shouldn’t afraid to be yourself.”

The band themselves ooze personality, which is one main reason they standout over the rest. Of course, their undoubtable musical talent and ability to shred is something they pride themselves upon in a very humble manner, but their ability to come across as ‘quirky’ and ‘fun’ is an excellent trait to have.

WHAT DOES ‘SHRED’ MEAN?

Dude? You don’t know what shredding is? Do you even, bro? – These are all keywords in the vocabulary of a average full-time ‘shredder’. The art of shredding comes from the Metal Scene and is a term used to describe very fast, intricate styles of play on the guitar. Therefore, it’s clear why Degreaser use this term so much to describe themselves, as their tracks emit so much they’d give a paper shredder a good run for it’s money.

BEHIND THE FAME AND NAME

Ben Katzman was able to explain in an interview that he wasn’t always the quirky, happy-go-lucky guy he is now, and in-fact, it was his “anger issues and temper problems” that stemmed from not being able to be express his personality that defined him. From a young age, he was able to convert this anger, into writing and was learning guitar, bass and piano at the age of only 9 years old.

Ben also runs his own independent record label called ‘BUFU’ which has helped launch deals for several budding bands around the world. This proves how much of a humble and extraordinary gentleman Ben Katzman is.

Degreasers new album titled ‘Quarter Life Crisis’ is a mixture of steady and fast tempo tracks that are guaranteed to blow your mind, and if not, your speakers. Be sure to check that out on their Soundcloud (link at the bottom of article) around the 12th July.

So if you haven’t had your fair share of shredding (or intricate styles of play as we established earlier) please do check out the links below, as they are an excellent band with an exciting future ahead!

Highs, Lows, and One Man Shows: Introducing Pat and the Pros

Who is Pat?

Born in Mauritius and established in Reunion Island at the age of 8, Patrice Pouzet has the privilege of both English and French culture. Patrice’s musical style has always varied between decades, but his music is definitely in the category of Depeche Mode and David Bowie. Although it must be said, he is no stranger to the music industry, as his previous work in band ‘Parallele’ allowed him to play several successful shows in London in the late 1990’s, leading them to almost get signed!

Unfortunately, all did not work out between the Parellele’s, but for Patrice, every cloud has it’s silver lining and VOILÀ! (which means ta-da in French, for any of you that aren’t bi-lingual) Pat and the Pro’s were born.

What does the music sound like?

His latest single ‘Hey Ooo I A O’ defines their style, and also highlights their inspiration from the likes of Depeche Mode. Undeniably, the guitar riffs are excellent, and the overall mix is great. However, it has to be said that the textures within the track really pack a punch, and the conventional effects used on the vocals are what sculpt that Depeche Mode kind of stylistic nature that resonates throughout its duration.

Now, it has to be said, the guitar solo in this track will get your body positioned for a classic session of air guitar, and it’s perfect guitar tone includes an excellent balance of tone and reverb to create fantastic example of what a solo should sound like in a track.

Pat’s latest track ‘Hey Ooo I A O’ (try typing that with your eyes closed) is available to listen to on the following links below, and whilst you’re there, make sure you check out their other tracks!

Son of William Bring Acoustic Guitar Back to the Fore

The completely unrelated Williams, Hayley and Ben, have already made a name for themselves on the Manchester acoustic scene, with Haylet’s thrilling, gossamer vocals marrying perfectly with Ben’s cultured guitar playing and harmonies. Having forged individually hugely successful solo careers, they found themselves as tutors to each other – Hayley guiding Ben through singing lessons; Ben teaching Hayley guitar. The common ground they found is Son of William, the sum of its constituent parts and a whole lot more.

Ben Williams’ previous musical life saw him wielding his guitar, sharing stages with the likes of Simply Red and Chic, whilst also receiving plaudits from Grammy Award-winning producer (Coldplay) Ken Nelson and go-to drummer, Steve White (The Who; Paul Weller). Hayley has forged her own path to success, achieving platinum sales in both Sweden and Norway. Their chance meeting when exchanging their respective musical skills swiftly lead to writing together and the formation of Son of William, giving them the opportunity to develop their passion for folk music, using sparse instrumentation and the Simon and Garfunkel-esque symbiosis of their harmonies to bring an authentic but entirely modern approach to the genre.

Son of William will be launching their EP at Manchester’s Whiskey Jar on the 27th June, entirely appropriately given their reputation on the city’s acoustic scene. Like Civil Wars before them, Son of William have taken the age-old tenets of the art of song-writing and stripped it bare, leaving nothing but the beauty of the music to shine through and enchant audiences.

Massive Attack Meet a Prodigy on Somewhere Somebody

Having achieved more than his allotted 15 minutes of fame when a YouTube video of him singing Adele’s Hello went ballistic, garnering nearly 3.5 million views, Tryzdin Grubbs can be forgiven for thinking that his brush with fame was nice whilst it lasted. However, a visit from Saint Mars front man, Marc Darchange, inquiring as to whether he’d be interested in collaborating on a track for their next album, has lead to Tryzdin becoming a full-time front man for the band.

Following their critically acclaimed 2017 EP, Ocean Blues, Saint Mars have now released their latest single, Somewhere Somebody, part of their forthcoming concept album centered on the true story of one 13 year-old boy’s tragic experience as a result of sustained bullying. The track, and the album as a whole, is given an entirely more sobering slant with the knowledge that Tryzdin himself has found how physically and emotionally damaging bullying can be. With the band also featuring long-term Massive Attack guitarist, Angelo Bruschini, Somewhere Somebody is a powerful, intoxicating experience, with a video which emphasises the impact bullying can have on peoples’ lives.

Saint Mars comprise keyboardist and singer, Marc Darcange; guitarist/bassist, Angelo Bruschini; bassist, keyboardist and singer, Jason X (ex-Transposer) and latest recruit Tryzdin. Tryzdin caught Marc’s attention along the way via the video and led to him flying from Switzerland to Columbus in America with the intention of recording just one track – six tracks later, it became clear that the parallels between the boy around whom the concept album revolves and Tryzdin were startling, from his age to his personal experiences.

Somewhere Somebody showcases Tryzdin’s mature, yearning vocals alongside some almost liquid-like keyboard atmospherics and chiming guitar. The forthcoming video reinforces the song’s narrative of the 13 year-old boy looking for love via his mobile phone, only to realise that he must love himself first. The single also features an acoustic version of Saint Mars’ first single, Ocean Blues, and a Vantablack remix of Somewhere Somebody and will appear on the album, Celesteville, to be released later in 2018.

An Interview With The One, The Only…Hard Rocker George Swan!

We managed to get the chance to sit down and speak to Canadian classic rocker George Swan about his past releases as well as what is yet to come…

Q:What attracted you to the kind of music you play?

A: The power of the music was the main thing for me. I listened to lots of prog rock in the 70’s.  I was getting into Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Deep Purple, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Zombies and The Who etc.  I really liked the heavy rock with the synthesizer and distorted organs going on.  Then I saw guys like The Who in 1977 and became a big Who fan overnight.  I also saw AC/DC around the same time with Bon Scott, and BTO-Bachman Turner Overdrive- among others.  I became a real fan of power rock.

Q: What is your local music scene like? How do you think you fit in?

A: My local music scene is very limited these days.  It’s too expensive here, everybody has left.  The venues are closing down too, so it’s not good.  Back in the day though, there were 12 or so live venues in Richmond alone where bands could play.  We fit right in.

Q: How do you go about writing your songs? What is the process you go through?

A: For song writing, usually while fooling around with a keyboard of some kind I’ll come up with a chord progression that sounds cool to me…  I jam on it for a while with the band, if there is one, and see what I/we come up with.  For the most part my vocals are sung over the progression and I just see what I come up with for words while jamming.  I record everything and you know basically play something for 45 minutes or so and see how it sounds.

Q: After so many years playing in bands, how have you found the move into being, essentially, a solo artist?

A: Now I win more arguments!  *kidding*…  No it’s definitely not as much fun, you really enjoy having all that input.  Plus there’s a lot more spontaneity in a band where you can just go somewhere musically on a whim and see what comes out.

Character, Chords and Chaos, The Survival Code Release ‘Along The Way’

The boys over at The Survival Code are at it again with their brand new single ‘Along the Way’. And this time, they’ve channeled their inspirations for this new song, and we are loving it.

Gary McGuinness (Guitar/Vocals) and Tom Cook (Drums/Backing vocals) have done it again with a monuments anthem that has the most head banging, air punching vibe possible.

With a catchy chorus that uses elegant yet prominent counter melodies, a guitar lick that has managed to cement itself into my head and a rhythm section for the ages, you’d be a fool not to check this out:

Ben Ridley’s New York Masterpiece (via Brighton)

Having excelled as a classical pianist, Ben Ridley now enters a new chapter in his musical life – that of a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. Taking inspiration from the likes of Todd Rundgren and Randy Newman, as well as keeping hold of his nuanced, classical training, he has spent years analysing the craft of song-writing. Following on from the success of his debut single, Dancing Mood, and its follow-up, I Always Do, Ben now releases his much-anticipated album, Sing.

Sing is a body of work designed to be experienced as a whole, with Ben showcasing his talent for melody and dedication to intricate arrangements and superior studio skills, to create cinematic snapshots of life, love and regret. Playing every instrument and taking care of all vocal duties, his tracks cover a range of styles, from an 80’s singer-songwriter feel, evoking images of a New York drenched in rain and neon (I Always Do), to the title track which has all the scope of a West End theatre show-stopper.

Based in Brighton, England, Ben has incorporated cinematic style and scope to his music which fits with his vision of a strong narrative running through his work. Having played live at venues such as the fabled Ronnie Scott’s and with a number of well-received classical music only albums under his belt, he is joined on the track by Gerrard – not another artist but in fact his trusty old grand piano.

Dancing Mood – The First in a Wave of Theatrical Showtunes?

Here’s an oddity – coming across as an up-tempo number for a theatrical show, Ben Ridley has potentially cornered an untapped market! Dancing Mood, his first single released as a singer-songwriter, comes after a successful career as a classical composer and pianist. Though still demonstrating a certain musical prowess, it’s certainly got “something”…
