A Brief History of Steampunk

Steampunk is a movement in popular culture which has broken free of its dirigible moorings and crossed over into everything from film to music. Steampunk started as a sub-genre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West”, in a future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. However, steampunk and Neo-Victorian are different in that the Neo-Victorian movement does not extrapolate on technology and embraces the positive aspects of the Victorian era’s culture and philosophy – Kim Newman’s early Anno Dracula work, for example, roots itself in Victorian Britain and surrounds itself with notable characters from the era, but has them behaving in the manner of the time.

Steampunk most recognisably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or of the modern authors such as Philip Pullman. Other examples of steampunk contain alternative-history-style presentations of such technology as steam cannons, lighter-than-air airships, analogue computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine.

The first known appearance of the term steampunk was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created as far back as the 1950s or 1960s. It can occasionally become entwined with other sub-genres, such as H.P.Lovecraft’s world of Old Ones and humans in peril. Steampunk has also come to refer to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century. The most recent entrant to this world has been music, the Steampunk Records label putting together an entire roster of bands who subscribe to the artistic ethics of the genre. As well as putting out albums of the bands, they have also performed concerts around the UK, seeing audiences attend the shows dressed, as the bands do, in suitably neo-Victorian style. As a movement, it succeeds largely as there are no boundaries relating to age or genre, the inclusivity and the fact that it is already deliberately slightly dated, meaning that it has a longevity that many movements which have been and gone have lacked.

Richie Ramone is famed for his time spent drumming for the iconic New York City rock band the Ramones. He spent almost five frenzied years, between 1983 and 1987, charging his way around the world; playing over 500 shows, whilst recording three albums. Praised by Joey Ramone for putting ‘the spirit back into the band’, Richie was the only Ramones drummer to be credited as the sole composer and writer of six Ramones songs.

In 2013, Richie Ramone catapulted back onto the rock’n’roll music scene with the release of solo debut album: ‘Entitled’. He now continues to uproot modern music culture with Cellophane’ – a stripped down, raw rock album; fully loaded with gravelly vocals, catchy guitar riffs and 80’s punk-rock vigour.

Aggressively catchy, ‘Cellophane’s’ powerful lead single ‘I Fix This’ perfectly reflects the ‘take no bollocks’ pure-punk attitude of the album. Yet showcasing Richie’s musical versatility – the heartfelt ‘I’m Not Ready’ delivers a more personal, toned-down melody. Other noteworthy tracks include Depeche Mode cover ‘Enjoy the Silence’ and ‘Pretty Poison’, which was penned by Richie during the 1980’s.

“Attack of the Animal Boy! World Tour” is an un-missable event for fans of the Ramones, Nirvana, Sex Pistols and Green Day. Throughout the shows Richie Ramone will be accompanied by his steadfast band of Rock’n’Roll veterans: lead guitarist Ronnie Simmons; bassist and vocalist Clare Misstake, and drummer/rhythm guitar player Ben Reagan.

Sneaky Nixons Release Firey Riotous New Single ‘Schadenfreude’ – OUT 8th August

The Sneaky Nixons set to release huge rock hit ‘Schadenfreude’ on the 8th of August 2016.

Listen to the new single HERE:

The Liverpool based and appropriately named ‘Sneaky Nixons’ champion a sound that is cheeky, punky and rough around the edges. That being said their production quality is absolutely impeccable.

The band describes themselves as an angry, semi political, semi religious, part feminist, sloppy activist group who play riouts, steam train guitar music. The have declared war on electronic dance music, guns and non believers of their rock-n-roll escapade. Flashy, Blase and with a startling superiority complex the band have no time for humdrum normality, preferring the out of control, dangerous and volatile and fast paced lifestyle of living in a brutal riotous and rock-n-roll fashion.

Similar to the infamous Rolling Stones, Blur, Oasis and Elvis Presley the band arent short of musical influences to be the next huge rock sensation. Having already toured Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Rotterdam the band are beginning to leave their mark globally.

Though the band use fairly little equipment they use intelligence, control and arrangement to created and incredible live performance. Uniquely using slide guitar, a megaphone, whammy bar and of course lighter fluid to set their guitars on fire!

New York noise-punks Polonium release tumultuous track ‘Tuberculosis’

Originally written 20 years ago and only now released, this skull-crushing brain-battering single sees Polonium frontman Foley portraying the character of an office drone on the edge to the accompaniment of some brutal and relentless chugging guitars.

I spent the 12 best years of my life / Behind a desk”

Many years in the making, the album’s latest album Seraphim is thankfully anything but a waste time.

Having grown over the years, Ilfracombe Rocks will accommodate up to 1500 music lovers this November. The three-day event is held from 4th-6th November 2016. Brought to life by iconic radio presenter DJ John Forster, known for hosting the number one unsigned rock music show on the net called ‘Dr. John’s Unsigned Rock Surgery’ on Rockbandom Radio, this event is a true gem for admirers of handmade sonic bliss. Located in John Fowler’s Holiday Park in Devon the annual celebration of gritty guitars and amplified solos is a perfect way to spend a rock’n’roll weekend not only for hardcore bikers in leather jackets, but for the whole family!

This year’s headliners are some of the most excellent tribute bands in the scene. Thunderstruck, The ZZtops and Higher on Maiden will be bringing back the days of rock revolution. This is a brilliant way to get to listen to potential stars on the rise and the stadium fillers of tomorrow!

Dr. John’s motto is simple – the DJ wants to promote good quality music and says: “the unsigned scene is possibly the most under-listened aspect of rock music. In many cases it is far superior to the mainstream and more honest. Many of them don’t get anywhere near the airplay and exposure they deserve.” That is why he decided to extend his work at the radio and give emerging artists an additional platform to get heard.

Crazy Fenton brand new single ‘Cool Ella’

20150203_110526

A welcome throwback to the golden ages of punk and rock, Crazy Fenton is the musical brainchild of songwriter Clive Aliker – a Norfolk based artist who is a big fan of making a good old fashioned ruckus. With influences from 60s garage rock and 70s punk all the way through to the modern day, Crazy Fenton is the work of a veteran musician who certainly knows how to rattle out a top tune.

‘Cool Ella’ is one hell of a way to come out fighting, and with the follow up album due a couple of weeks later on July 13th, you will be hearing a lot more of Crazy Fenton in 2015. The album, produced by British EDM trailblazer Alex Banks (EZ Rollers), is the kind of release which will have the music industry on high alert with its raw song writing and production values.

With lyrics inspired – in Clive Aliker’s own words – by ‘deaths, mental failings, and a complete inability to understand the female species’, these are songs that listeners can’t fail to relate to.

And in ‘Cool Ella’, Crazy Fenton has picked out one hell of an entrance.
