Son of William Bring Acoustic Guitar Back to the Fore

The completely unrelated Williams, Hayley and Ben, have already made a name for themselves on the Manchester acoustic scene, with Haylet’s thrilling, gossamer vocals marrying perfectly with Ben’s cultured guitar playing and harmonies. Having forged individually hugely successful solo careers, they found themselves as tutors to each other – Hayley guiding Ben through singing lessons; Ben teaching Hayley guitar. The common ground they found is Son of William, the sum of its constituent parts and a whole lot more.

Ben Williams’ previous musical life saw him wielding his guitar, sharing stages with the likes of Simply Red and Chic, whilst also receiving plaudits from Grammy Award-winning producer (Coldplay) Ken Nelson and go-to drummer, Steve White (The Who; Paul Weller). Hayley has forged her own path to success, achieving platinum sales in both Sweden and Norway. Their chance meeting when exchanging their respective musical skills swiftly lead to writing together and the formation of Son of William, giving them the opportunity to develop their passion for folk music, using sparse instrumentation and the Simon and Garfunkel-esque symbiosis of their harmonies to bring an authentic but entirely modern approach to the genre.

Son of William will be launching their EP at Manchester’s Whiskey Jar on the 27th June, entirely appropriately given their reputation on the city’s acoustic scene. Like Civil Wars before them, Son of William have taken the age-old tenets of the art of song-writing and stripped it bare, leaving nothing but the beauty of the music to shine through and enchant audiences.

Singer-Songwriters Vidal & Curma on ‘Another Plane’ with Latest EP

Three track treat due for release on August 10th

Currently splitting time between their Northern Italian hometown of Padova and the UK’s capital, songwriters Vidal & Curma are a duo making a name for themselves on the London circuit. Playing in some of the most prestigious independent music venues in the city, their reputation has already won them a residency at the revered Proud Camden, where they were invited for repeat showings by popular demand thanks to the innate energy and sense of fun in their songs.

Their music boasts a loose, anarchic freshness without compromising on quality, giving an acoustic twist on the indie likes of The Libertines, The Strokes, Mac Demarco, and Velvet Underground to name a few. But perhaps their closest comparison is less well known – both Vidal and Curma are huge fans of Django Reinhardt, a gypsy guitarist  from Belgium who was active from the 30s to the 50s. Reinhardt single-handedly invented the gypsy-jazz genre, and both band members consider him the best guitarist of all time.

His brilliance has clearly rubbed off, and the new three track EP ‘Another Plane’ is a real, offbeat, acoustic treat.

See Vidal & Curma in action with this live Tradiio session:

Specialising in writing songs about everyday problems faced by many, song themes vary from the difficulty of maintaining relationships nowadays, where everyone travels and moves a lot (‘Another Plane’), to everyday situations that can lead to deep contemplation (‘Tonight’). The final track, ‘Never Say Again’, is about the unpredictability of meeting someone special in a massive city like London.

With each track boasting different elements which make them special individually, the combination of all three tracks makes for a very consistent release. And it’s all tied together with an acoustic irreverence that really sets them apart from other, more pretentious, peers. It’s an approach that clearly works, with the band already getting the attention of Universal Music Group A&R Manager Fausto Donato. A sign of things to come.

This is the first release on Tradiio Recordings, a new record label set up to release the best performing artists on Tradiio, a music discovery app for iOS, Android and Web.

Interview: Kelly Oliver

Kelly Oliver PRHaving only started gigging in May last year, folk singer-songwriter Kelly Oliver has made quite an impact. Within months of starting she found herself invited to open Folkstock Festival before, incredibly, bagging herself a spot at the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival. It marks a mighty rise for someone who has been on the circuit for less than a year, and with single ‘He Walked on the Side of the Sea’ out March 17th, we took the chance to ask her a few questions.

Many of our readers won’t have heard of your music before, how would you describe your sound?

I would say it’s influenced by traditional folk music. Traditional Irish folk music definitely, but I do have country influences. I’m influenced a lot by Dolly Parton, and people like Kenny Rogers, singers like Alison Krauss and Cara Dillon. But I think the way I write songs is influenced a lot by Irish folk music, the traditional ways. Really I take influences from all sorts, so I’m not sure how I’d describe it but that’s probably the best way.

The upcoming single ‘He Walked on the Side of the Sea’ features BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year nominee Will Pound on Harmonica. How did that collaboration come about?

That was through Twitter! I followed him on Twitter – I was a fan of his a little bit before – and because I play harmonica I’d already had the song recorded [for EP ‘Far From Home – Ed]. But my manager just approached him to see if he wanted to do a collaboration, we sent him the song and he agreed. So it was quite quickly done actually, it was really good fun.

Your rise since starting out last year has been stratospheric – did you have any inkling you’d get the reaction you have when you started out?

Not at all. I went travelling basically, and once I went I decided while I was out there that I wanted to at least have a go at the music. I didn’t know anything, I never thought what could happen. At the beginning I just focussed on trying to do gigs, got myself a Facebook stage and started at the bottom really. Started with trying to promote myself online and approach people for gigs. I guess it’s the same way every musician starts, so I never thought I would even have the chance to record an EP let alone the things that have come from that so it was really shocking!

‘He Walked on the Side of the Sea’ was originally released, minus Will Pound, as part of your EP ‘Far From Home’, which has been a big part of your success so far. Do you have any plans for a follow up as yet?

Yeah, we do. There’s going to be an album that will be recorded and released this year. I have got some songs that I’m looking to put on there but then there might be some that I haven’t written yet, depending on finding the time to write and record.

Where is the best place to find your music online?

Kevine Devine reveals new acoustic video ahead of UK February tour

Kevin DivineAs a taster for his upcoming UK tour, Kevin Devine has revealed a new homemade acoustic video. Filmed by himself, his intimate rendition of ‘Bubblegum’ is streaming on YouTube now.

Following the release of his two albums Bulldozer and Bubblegum last year, the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter is set to return to the UK in February for a headline tour. The tour kicks off February 4th with an already sold out show at The Lexington, London.

February UK Headline dates:

Tue 4th Feb 2014              The Lexington, London – SOLD OUT
Wed 5th Feb 2014             Louisianna, Bristol
Thu 6th Feb 2014              Soup Kitchen, Manchester
Fri 7th Feb 2014                Nice n Sleazys, Glasgow

Bulldozer and Bubblegum, were drastically different sounding albums yet equally acclaimed. Both albums were fan funded through a record-setting Kickstarter campaign and released via Big Scary Monsters.

For Bubblegum, Kevin was joined by his Goddamn Band to create a raw and fuzzy yet lyrically deft rock record. Much of its sound was brought out by producer Jesse Lacey, frontman of Brand New. The tracks that make up Bulldozer, the more folk-rock led album, features stripped backed, heartfelt tracks which maintain Kevin’s penchant for penning tracks washed with pop sensibility and lyrical depth.

Derek Ryan Releases New Single: ‘100 Numbers’

Irish country star set to release his new single in the UK on 24th March taken from new album ‘Country Soul’, out now.

Derek Ryan’s career has already been an unquestionable success. He signed to WarnerMusic at the age of 17 with his band D-Side and went on to make a multi-platinum selling record with ‘Real World’. He has also been nominated for several Meteor Awards in Ireland and has had global success with a number 1 single in Japan. Derek has also already gained 3 top 10 hits in the UK, and is now looking to further establish himself  with the release of his new single 100 Numbersfollowing the UK release of his new album Country Soul.

He commands a very loyal following of fans who have known and loved him since his D-Side days! The ‘Official Derek Ryan Fanclub’ Facebook is constantly buzzing with praise and love for Derek, along with a vibrant Twitter feed which keeps his fans hooked on his new gigs and music.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/derekryanmusic

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/derekryanfanclubofficial

The track itself is a clear nod to his Irish country and folk music roots but also has an unmistakeable pop tone too with a very hooky melody and a catchy rhythm that is hard to shake!

Listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_48VtJ4sjg

‘100 Numbers’ was, like most of Ryan’s music, self-penned. The lyrics speak of being surrounded by people once he’d moved to London to continue his career, but still suffering from homesickness and missing those he is closest to. It was inspired by a tough time in his life when he was living in a bedsit in the city and desperately wanted to get back to his home in Ireland and continue making the music which he loves and has grown up with.

These feelings came despite the ‘100 Numbers’ in his phone, and there was no one who could help him shake his thoughts of home. The song is therefore a look into Derek’s own journey out of loneliness and back to his roots both musically and personally.

Musically ‘100 Numbers’ is quite layered with a number of different instruments being used throughout to give it a warmth characteristic of Derek’s music. In terms of comparison, the Westlife pop style is tempting but it has a more contemporary Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling pop folk feel to it whilst retaining a traditional flavour.

Guitar Sensation ‘Daryl Kellie’ to Release New Album ‘Wintersong’

Daryl Kellie Press release FINAl-page-001

To find your first guitar at the young age of eleven in the attic of your parent’s new house is a lucky find, but for Daryl Kellie, it can only be described as fate. Self taught for most of his life, he is undeniably one of the most talented fingerstyle guitar players in the UK, with influences ranging from Queen to Django Reinhardt. Daryl has combined his unique talent with his mesmerising vocals, and he will be releasing his highly anticipated album ‘Wintersong’ on 10th February 2014.

By the age of sixteen, Daryl was gigging every weekend, with his younger brother Nick on drums. He moved to London when he was nineteen to study music, and hasn’t looked back. Living in his van, with a bed, camp-stove and of course, a guitar in the back, this was when he really started to develop as an artist. He was even taught by Jazz guitar legend Martin Taylor. Despite attracting lots of attention from music managers, Daryl decided to remain completely independent and release his own music without the help of a label. Daryl’s message to others who may be in this predicament is “figure out what you really love and concentrate on that, if you try to do something else, your heart won’t be in it”. His ever-growing fan-base means he can also tour without the involvement of big promoters.

Daryl has toured constantly for the past 2 years and supported a massive range of acts, from Toploader to Carl Palmer of Emmerson Lake and Palmer fame, plus notorious American blogger Perez Hilton has also raved about him….”So clever! So good! And, the fact that he’s gorgeous doesn’t hurt either!”.

Here are just a couple of the many outstanding reviews he has received:

‘Daryl Kellie is a brilliant and exciting new musical talent’

– Richard Chapman, (Author of the million selling classic ‘The Complete Guitarist and ‘The New Complete Guitarist’)

‘To call Daryl a guitarist would be a bit of an over simplification. A million miles away from that guy who used to walk around college twanging his way through Green Day covers to anyone who’d listen, Daryl treats his guitar like a mix between a drum kit, a keyboard and a guitar. Utilizing an oft attempted (but rarely mastered) ‘tapping’ technique along with ‘body percussion’ as employed by fellow guitarists such as Eric Roche and Tommy Emanuel, Daryl dropped jaws with his cheeky cover of Beyonce’s omnipresent ‘Single Ladies’ and literally melted minds with an extended Michael Jackson medley. Anything that makes hearing ‘Single Ladies’ for the billionth time a little less ear-stabbingly repetitive deserves the highest praise imaginable.

–Sternberg Clarke

If you can’t wait to hear the album, Daryl is releasing a cover of the Beyonce hit ‘Single Ladies’ on December 16th.
